Encyclopedia of the Dead

Theatre Performance by Divadlo Miloco, Czech Republic

What value do we place on the life of a man On a book They are a source of morality and iniquity, grace and transgression. Books in quantity are not dangerous; a single book is. - Danilo Kis

An enormously impressive stage accomplishment delivered by a company whose individual talents are quite stunning - there are manifest stars here - and brilliant in ensemble. Their work is a joy to experience. - Gerry Coglan, The Irish Times

In this furious rhythm, epochs are rotating, empires are falling, systems are changing a performance like a runaway train - Nikola Gurovic, Radio Free Euope

Divadlo Miloco is proud to return to Ireland with their provocative original work, Encyclopedia of the Dead. The production premiered in June 2001, and has since performed to critical acclaim in the Czech Republic, Ireland and Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Encyclopedia of the Dead is inspired by the short stories of the late Yugoslavian writer, Danilo Kis. A combination of physical theatre, story-telling, clown, original live music and song, this ensemble production explores the themes of nationalism and identity and the relationships between history and fiction. Visually stunning and fast-paced, Encyclopedia of the Dead incorporates seven languages and as many nationalities, tailoring the story to each unique locality and reaffirming the universality of the message.

Encyclopedia of the Dead animates four of Kis stories on a personal level by delving into the joys, sorrows and intentions of individual characters whose combined actions culminated in the unimaginable. The central narrative traces the tumultuous history of the infamous anti-Semetic forgery The protocols of the Elders of Zion. It is a parable illustrating the dangers of dividing the world along the lines of us and them.
