President Benes' decrees from 1940-45 renewed the constitutional order of the Czechoslovak Republic which was disturbed by the Munich Agreement of 1938 [under which Czechoslovakia was asked to give up the Sudetenland to Hitler], the division of Czechoslovakia, the occupation of Bohemia and Moravia by the Nazis and the declaration of Slovakia's independence.
